Who Is Kevin O’Reilly & Is He the ‘Link’ That Connects the White House to Operation Fast and Furious?

An Obama administration official that congressional investigators believe connects the White House to the failed federal gun-walking operation “Fast and Furious” was abruptly transferred to Iraq following inquiries by members of Congress and the Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general, CNSNews.com reports.

However, he is no longer in the country and his current whereabouts are unknown.

The official in question is Kevin O’Reilly, a White House National Security staffer who reportedly consulted with the ATF special agent in charge of running Fast and Furious out of Arizona, William Newell, on a regular basis. Newell was one of the officials singled out in the IG’s Fast and Furious report.

Once Congress and DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz discovered the White House’s intriguing connection to Fast and Furious, O’Reilly was shipped overseas to Iraq out of the blue, replacing an official who had already secured the job and who had a wife awaiting his arrival in Iraq, according to the report.

CNSNews.com reporter Craig Bannister explains:

The White House had been denying Republicans and the Inspector General permission to question O’Reilly in Iraq by phone. But, now the State Dept. tells CNSNews.com that O’Reilly has left Iraq and it will not reveal his whereabouts:

“I can confirm that he [Kevin O’Reilly] is no longer in Iraq but he has not yet started in his next position.” “So, I can’t confirm what that position is. I just don’t have any information on that right now, what his next position will be or when he will be starting.”

For the record, CNSNews.com repeatedly asked the State Dept. WHERE O’Reilly was, not WHAT his new job was. (Presumably, he didn’t just vanish from the face of the earth, so you‘d think they’d know their employee’s whereabouts).

Additionally, the State Department says no official biography of O’Reilly exists because he is not in a senior level position, leaving Fast and Furious investigators with very little to go on.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) threatened to subpoena O’Reilly in a letter to his attorney last Thursday if he continued to ignore inquiries by Congress, saying that O’Reilly is the “link connecting the White House to the scandal.”

However, as Bannister points out, “Eric Holder was able to ignore a subpoena – and actually be held in contempt of Congress for doing it – without even losing his job.”

Attempts to contact Reps. Issa, Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) were unsuccessful.

‘CITIZEN MILITIAS’: ARIZONANS VOW TO TAKE MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS TO PROTECT BORDER

Arizona militias say they are done waiting for the government to protect their borders after state lawmakers shot down a bill that would have created a state-sanctioned border militia unit.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that militia volunteers remain committed to stopping what they say is an invasion of smugglers and illegal immigrants, even after being denied state organization status.

The defeated bill would have created a 300-member volunteer militia at the request of the governor. They would have been be armed; however, a provision in the bill required that members be screened in order to prevent violent extremists from joining. You can read the text of the bill here.

Like almost any topic related to illegal immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border, the issue is extremely contentious. The Daily Star reports:

A longtime Arizona border-militia leader, Jack Foote, worked for a period with the group that wrote the bill and said its demise is motivating sympathizers of the border-militia movement.

“We have now washed our hands of our state’s Legislature,” Foote, of Cottonwood, said via email. “Now we are going to do things our own way.”

But critics of that movement, such as Mark Pitcavage of the Anti-Defamation League, said the border-militia idea is extremist in its nature, not just at its outer edges.

“Some are explicitly white supremacist,” said Pitcavage, who has studied extreme right-wing movements for years. “The others may not be white supremacists but may well be racists.”

Critics of militia groups often point to the case of Jason Todd “J.T.” Ready, a self-proclaimed neo-Nazi and border-militia leader, who shot and killed four people before taking his own life. He was being investigated by the FBI at the time.

Arizona Militias Vow to Protect Their Borders After Citizen Border Group Bill Defeated

The latest legislative blow to citizen militias in Arizona is part of a growing list defeats.

The fight to form a lawful border militia in Arizona began in 2007, when former Sen. Jack Harper introduced a bill to sanction a state Homeland Security Force that could be used on the border if called upon by the governor, The Star reports. However, then-Gov. Janet Napolitano, now Department of Homeland Security secretary, vetoed the legislation, calling it unnecessary because the governor is already within his or her right to call up a militia.

Harper and others pushed the issue again in 2011 and were able to pass a new bill to establish an Arizona State Guard. The victory was shallow, however, as no money was provided establish the guard and the toothless bill made little impact.

Then drawing from the public laws of 22 other states, state Sen. Sylvia Allen put together a team of people to write a bill that called for $1.9 million to fund the new volunteer militia last year.

But like the others, the legislation faced heavy opposition from lawmakers and was eventually killed. Among the bill’s opponents were Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and head of the Arizona National Guard, Maj. Hugo Salazar who worried about the militia group being armed and that he hadn’t been consulted enough, The Star reports.

“All this does is, it legitimizes the Minutemen-type model of enforcement,” said state Sen. Steve Gallardo, a staunch opponent of the bill.

The reported surge in border militia activity in Arizona, as Fox News Latino points out, seems to contradict a report published in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Spring 2012 Intelligence Report that claimed the “nativist extremist” movement had collapsed.

The same report links the Tea Party to the armed militia groups, saying the Tea Party movement has become “home to many nativist extremists.” The center argues the interest of the two groups intersected in 2009 over President Obama’s healthcare plan when coverage for illegal immigrants was a hot topic issue.

“Since then, the lines between the movements have become increasingly blurred, with leaders frequently making appearances at each other’s events,” the report read.

Now, even without legislative support, militia supporters are vowing to continue.

“There is a large military veteran population in our state who would go down there and do the work that the state needs done under the state flag,” Michael Frye, a supporter of the bill, told the Star. Now, he added, “There’s really no other choice but for those folks like myself to form citizen militias.”

“Drug Lords” Targeted in Fast & Furious Worked for FBI

In another significant embarrassment to the scandal-plagued Obama administration, newly released documents revealed that the supposed “drug lords” being targeted in the deadly federal “Fast and Furious” gun-running operation were actually working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) all along.

Thousands of American weapons were illegally offered to violent Mexican cartels by the Justice Department as part of the controversial program — many of them paid for by U.S. tax dollars through the two FBI assets supposedly being targeted in the investigation. Those guns were later linked to hundreds of murders, including the killings of U.S. federal agents.

The operation came to a screeching halt after it was exposed in Congress and the media by whistle-blowers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (still known as ATF). The government responded to the scandal by claiming it was simply attempting to investigate Mexican cartels using a program that went tragically wrong.

But the facts paint a much different picture. According to documents obtained recently by the Los Angeles Times, the ATF zeroed in on a suspected gun trafficker named Manuel Fabian Celis-Acosta. He was detained in May of 2010, questioned, and eventually released after promising to cooperate with investigators seeking to track down two supposed “drug lords.”

Those two cartel chiefs, it turned out, were actually already on the FBI’s payroll. According to a source cited by Fox News, both of the men were considered “national security assets” who were “off limits” and “untouchable.” The ATF apparently did not find out until mid-2010.

“This means the entire goal of Fast and Furious — to target these two individuals and bring them to justice — was a failure,” noted Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif., pictured above) and Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), who are investigating the scandal, in a memo to other members of Congress. ATF has refused to comment, citing ongoing investigations.

Rep. Issa and Sen. Grassley also noted that the agency should have known the two supposed “targets” of the purported “investigation” were working for the FBI, blasting “the serious management failures that occurred throughout all levels during Fast and Furious.” That would have allowed the deadly operation to be shut down before thousands of taxpayer-funded high-powered firearms were handed over to violent cartels.

A lawyer representing Celis-Acosta, the alleged gun runner who was arrested and released by the ATF, suspects that the various federal agencies involved in the scandal purposely withheld the critical information. “When one hand is not talking to the other, perhaps somebody is hiding something,” attorney Adrian Fontes told the Times. “Was this intentional?”

Supporters of the Second Amendment had long suspected that the administration’s firearm-trafficking operation was aimed at demonizing gun rights and imposing more unconstitutional restrictions on Americans’ right to keep and bear arms. Official documents later confirmed those suspicions, revealing that the bloody fallout from the scheme was being used to advance more gun control.

More recently, analysts have pointed to scandalous video footage of Attorney General Eric Holder before he took over the Justice Department. In the speech, then-U.S. Attorney Holder proposes a massive tax-funded propaganda campaign to “brainwash” — in his words — America’s youth against gun rights.

His anti-gun campaign, however, appears to have backfired spectacularly. After bragging about the gun-running program in Mexico during a 2009 speech, Holder later claimed — under oath — that he had not heard of it until it was exposed in the media. He later admitted that was not true.

Since then, Holder has been caught lying repeatedly even as he lashed out at the media and investigators. Over 100 members of Congress are already calling for his resignation. And if he continues his efforts to cover up the Fast and Furious scandal, Rep. Issa has warned that he could be held in contempt.

Incredibly, after the latest public disclosures surrounding the two FBI “drug lords,” the Department of Justice vowed to break more federal laws by refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas. In a letter to Rep. Issa and Sen. Grassley, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich claimed their staffs were exposing the criminality to the public.

“While we do not know who provided these letters to reporters, we are deeply disturbed that the sensitive law-enforcement information contained in them has now entered the public realm,” Weich wrote. “This public disclosure is impeding the department’s efforts to hold individuals accountable for their illegal acts.” He also said the Department would not be handing over any more information due to the purported “sensitivity” of supposed “ongoing operations.”

A spokesman for Rep. Issa, however, said the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee would not put up with such lawlessness. “It is troubling that the attorney general continues to express the outlandish view that his compliance with lawful and binding subpoenas is merely optional,” Issa spokeswoman Becca Watkins told CNN.

Issa’s Committee is also attempting to investigate a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) scheme to launder the profits of Mexican drug cartels. The Justice Department has so far refused to cooperate, but pressure is still growing after the New York Times blew the whistle on the program late last year.

And it is not just Congress that is growing weary of the administration’s antics. A recent survey of ATF agents reveals an extreme lack of trust in leadership. According to the study, less than half of those surveyed believed the agency’s senior leaders maintained high standards of honesty and integrity.

The Fast and Furious scandal — and the retaliation against brave whistleblowers who exposed the scheme — contributed to the dismal results. “The controversies plaguing ATF over the last year have weighed heavily on the morale of employees and their faith in senior leadership,” ATF spokesman Drew Wade told Fox News. “Mistakes were made.”

More than a few top drug bosses and even government agents have claimed the U.S. government is arming and protecting certain drug cartels. And as the administration continues to stonewall while top Justice officials plead the Fifth Amendment, public suspicion is only growing.

Gun Battles in Mexico Force U.S. to Shut Down Two Border Crossings By Edwin Mora

Gun Battles in Mexico Force U.S. to Shut Down Two Border Crossings By Edwin Mora March 14, 2012  Unmanned Border Crossing  In this Oct. 31, 2011 photo, work is underway in Big Bend National Park, Texas, on a planned remotely-operated port of entry at the Rio Grande. It would be the first of its kind on the U.S.-Mexico border and provide access to Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico, seen in the distance. (AP Photo/Christopher Sherman)  (CNSNews.com) – Several gun battles between Mexican military forces and drug traffickers  prompted U.S. authorities to temporarily shut down two international bridge crossings on the Southwest border last week.  The two bridges are located at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) port of entry in Eagle Pass, Texas – connecting Eagle Pass, Texas, to Piedras Negras in Coahuila, Mexico.  In an e-mail to CNSNews.com, Douglas Mosier, a spokesman for CBP in El Paso, confirmed that the bridges were closed “in response to violent activity occurring in Piedras Negras, Mexico and as per coordination between the Government of Mexico, the Eagle Pass Police Department and the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department.”  “CBP has protocols in place to handle these types of situations and enacted those protocols in response to this incident,” added Mosier. “Our primary concern is for the safety of the traveling public and the safety of our officers.”  He said that the shut down took place overnight between approximately 9 p.m. on March 6 and 8 a.m. the following day.  Traffic to Mexico was stopped at about 9 p.m. Northbound traffic from Mexico coming across the larger bridge – Camino Real International – was rerouted overnight to the Eagle Pass International Bridge.  By 7:40 a.m. on March 7, both international bridges had fully resumed northbound and southbound operations.  Mosier said he could not provide any more details on the battles, which government agency ordered the shut down, and whether CBP often closes down border crossings as a result of drug war violence in Mexico.  However, according to Mexican news reports, the U.S. State Department requested that the bridges be closed in response to a series of gun battles between the Mexican military and bandits in Piedras Negras armed with rifles and rocket grenade launchers.  The State Department did not immediately return calls for comment.  Media accounts from both the U.S. and Mexico revealed that the traffickers used an 18-wheeler engulfed in fire to set up a road block approximately a quarter-mile from one of the bridges and that one female police officer and at least six members of the Mexican military were wounded as a result of the armed conflict.  Eagle Pass Police Chief Tony Castañeda, who referred to the armed criminals as drug traffickers, said, “This is not out of the norm. There have been several gun battles going on here with the narcotics traffickers for quite some time. But it’s never gotten to this magnitude where they close bridges,” reported The San Antonio Express-News on March 8.  Speaking in Spanish, Castañeda said in a video that the bridges were closed to prevent the criminals from “fleeing and entering the U.S. to escape because many of them do have the right to enter by means of a passport,” The Eagle Pass Business Journal reported on March 7.  However, Mosier said that CBP was still allowing northbound traffic. It was traffic going into Mexico that was completely stopped.  The decision to close the bridges was aimed at “protecting citizens and preventing some of the delinquents from entering and fleeing from what had occurred on the Mexican side and to maintain security,” added Castañeda.  Castañeda revealed that CBP officers and members of the police force have been placed on alert, adding that as a result he expects northbound traffic on the bridges to be slow for several days following the incident.

Alan Simpson, Senator from Wyoming , Co-Chair of Obama’s deficit commission, calls senior citizens the Greediest Generation as he compared “Social Security ” to a Milk Cow with 310 million teats.

Here’s a response in a letter from PATTY MYERS in Montana … I think she is a little ticked off! She also tells it like it is!
“Hey Alan, let’s get a few things straight..
1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole for FIFTY YEARS.
2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 YEARS (since I was 15 years old. I am now 63).
3 My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other Americans, were safely tucked away in an interest bearing account for decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give OUR money to a bunch of zero ambition losers in return for votes, thus bankrupting the system and turning Social Security into a Ponzi scheme that would have made Bernie Madoff proud..
4. Recently, just like Lucy & Charlie Brown, you and your ilk pulled the proverbial football away from millions of American seniors nearing retirement and moved the goalposts for full retirement from age 65 to age 67. NOW, you and your shill commission is proposing to move the goalposts YET AGAIN.
5. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying into Medicare from Day One, and now you morons propose to change the rules of the game. Why? Because you idiots mismanaged other parts of the economy to such an extent that you need to steal money from Medicare to pay the bills.
6. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying income taxes our entire lives, and now you propose to increase our taxes yet again. Why? Because you incompetent bastards spent our money so profligately that you just kept on spending even after you ran out of money. Now, you come to the American taxpayers and say you need more to pay off YOUR debt.
To add insult to injury, you label us “greedy” for calling “bullshit” on your incompetence. Well, Captain Bullshit, I have a few questions for YOU.
1. How much money have you earned from the American taxpayers during your pathetic 50-year political career?
2. At what age did you retire from your pathetic political career, and how much are you receiving in annual retirement benefits from the American taxpayers?
3. How much do you pay for YOUR government provided health insurance?
4. What cuts in YOUR retirement and healthcare benefits are you proposing in your disgusting deficit reduction proposal, or, as usual, have you exempted yourself and your political cronies?
It is you, Captain Bullshit, and your political co-conspirators called Congress who are the “greedy” ones. It is you and your fellow nutcases who have bankrupted America and stolen the American dream from millions of loyal, patriotic taxpayers. And for what? Votes. That’s right, sir. You and yours have bankrupted America for the sole purpose of advancing your pathetic political careers. You know it, we know it, and you know that we know it.
And you can take that to the bank, you miserable son of a bitch .
If you like the way things are in America delete this. If you agree with what a fellow Montana citizen Patty Myers says, PASS IT ON!!!!

UN Gang’s cartel contact gunned down in mexico

UN gang’s key cartel contact gunned down in Mexico by Admin on January 19, 2012 in Crime and Border Security, Mexican Cartel War, Narco Terrorism, Sinaloa cartel, Zetas with No comments The covered-up body of a dead Canadian man lies on a street in Culiacan January 16, 2012. The Canadian citizen was found dead with several gunshots to his head near a commercial area in Culiacan, according to local media. REUTERS/Stringer (MEXICO – Tags: CRIME LAW CIVIL UNREST) CULIACAN, Mexico — A B.C. man executed in the Mexican state of Sinaloa this week was a high-ranking member of the United Nations gang who had direct contact with Mexican cartels, The Vancouver Sun has learned. Salih Abdulaziz Sahbaz’s partly covered body lies in the road in Culiacán, the capital of the cartel-plagued Mexican state of Sinaloa. The B.C. man had taken over the Mexican end of the business after two of his associates were killed. Photograph by: Stringer, Reuters dAbdulaziz Sahbaz, 37, spent much of the last three years in Mexico and was the key cartel contact for the notorious B.C. gang, police sources confirmed. But he also returned regularly to Surrey, where he had family ties. Sahbaz was found early Monday at an intersection in Culiacán, the capital of cartel-plagued Sinaloa state. He had been shot in the head with a .45-calibre gun. Sahbaz had taken over the Mexican end of the business after two other UN gang members, Ahmet (Lou) Kaawach and Elliott (Taco) Castenada, were gunned down in front of a taco stand in Guadalajara in July 2008. He is believed to have owed money to at least one cartel after losing a shipment of cocaine and was working off his debt when he was slain. Sahbaz had been active in the UN gang since at least 2004, when he and several other Iraqi refugees were brought into the fold by former leader Clay Roueche. Sahbaz is in an infamous photo of UN members dressed in black taken at the March 2005 funeral of gangster Evan Appell, who died of an overdose. Sahbaz had been charged twice with trafficking drugs in Vancouver. At one point, he was boss of the UN gang’s “Kurdish Crew” that controlled the Downtown Eastside drug trade. But he also had a falling out with associate Barzan Tilli-Choli after a Vancouver home invasion directed by Tilli-Choli targeted a friend of Sahbaz’s. They are believed to have later patched up their differences. A police affidavit filed in court and earlier obtained by The Sun described a 2006 New Year’s Eve party in Vancouver attended by Sahbaz and other UN gang members. When gang squad members checked out the event at the Plush nightclub on Pacific Boulevard, they “recognized many of the males in the private gathering or party as being members or associates of the UN gang,” the affidavit said. Roueche was at the party with Sahbaz, who was kicked out of the club, according to the document. Officers noticed that Sahbaz was wearing “a diamond-encrusted ring with traditional Chinese characters on it.” He allowed the Vancouver police to photograph the ring. The characters “translate into the English language as United Nations,” the affidavit said. The UN gang was founded in the Fraser Valley by Roueche and others in 1997. It consisted of B.C.-born men and newer immigrants — mostly from Asia — and once boasted more than 100 members and another 100 associates. But the UN has been decimated in recent years by murders, shootings and arrests of key members in both Canada and the U.S. Sahbaz, Castenada and Kaawach all died in Mexico. Adam Kataoka was killed in Argentina in late 2009. Diane Meyer and Michael Gordon were gunned down in the Fraser Valley in 2008. Last November, Axel Curtis was shot to death in Vancouver. Roueche was arrested in the U.S. in May 2008 and is now serving a 30-year sentence for smuggling cocaine and marijuana and laundering millions in drug profits. At least a dozen of his B.C. mules and associates have also been convicted in the U.S. Tilli-Choli and five others are awaiting trial in B.C. Supreme Court for murder and conspiracy to commit murder for allegedly plotting to kill the Bacon brothers and their Red Scorpion associates. Several more UN members or associates are before the courts on drug trafficking, attempted murder and murder charges. Two others — Conor D’Monte and Cory Vallee — were also charged with murder a year ago, but have not been located. There is an international warrant for their arrest. Gang expert Doug Spencer said Tuesday he is not surprised to learn of Sahbaz’s demise. “It is more than expected,” said Spencer, a former VPD detective now with Transit police. “I knew it was coming because he was living the life and when they are living the life, they all get it.” Spencer incorporates new gang murders into the anti-gang presentations he does in Metro Vancouver schools. “It is an important message to get out that for these guys, there is nowhere to hide,” Spencer said. Obama: I’ll Decide What’s Constitutional

The assault on the 2nd Amendment and the Constitution by the Obama administration continues.

Just a few days before Christmas, Obama served notice to all Americans that he will continue to abuse executive privilege by seeking new ways to vilify gun owners and further his anti-gun agenda.

Congress placed a provision in the $1 trillion omnibus spending bill for 2012 designed to bar the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from using any of its $30.7 billion taxpayer funds to “advocate or promote gun control.” However, upon signing the bill into law, …

Fellow Patriots

February 9, 2012

Fellow Patriots,

It is with a heavy heart that we must report a cancellation of our event in Tombstone.   We have tried diligently to pull it all together but have been resoundingly unsuccessful.    The complete lack of response from all the agencies that would be involved, a lack of funding, and a profound lack of interest have led us to the conclusion that this is simply not supposed to happen.

The rally was an idea that we felt would support those who live along the border, they seem totally uninterested in participating in any way.   Perhaps they have grown weary of ‘do-gooders’ coming down to the border and attempting to ‘help’…if that is the case then we can certainly understand their frustration.    Nothing has changed in the area, indeed, the situation has grown increasingly more horrible.     With the threat of Muslim terrorist crossing our border on the rise, multiple be-headings and the deaths of good men who are trying to protect us, our border has taken on an aura of complete and utter desperation.   It behooves our government to fulfill one of the FEW things they are supposed to be doing, protecting our borders.   Seemingly the government is sooo busy sticking their collective noses into every aspect of our lives they can not be bothered to fulfill this one directive from the Constitution.

The very best we can do at this point is to encourage all of you to get out and vote!   This administration is the most corrupt and divisive this country has seen in many a decade.   The attack on all of our liberties continues unabated and the thought of four more years of this disaster is unacceptable!   Whomever runs against Obama, whether it be Mr. Romney, Mr. Santorum or a ham sandwich we recommend you vote !

God Bless America!

The mother of murdered Border Patrol agent Brian Terry had harsh words for Attorney General Eric Holder after Thursday’s House oversight committee hearing on Operation Fast and Furious.

“THIS IS FOR YOU SON,” Mrs. Terry posted on Facebook at about 3:30 p.m. “Mr. Holder. How come you can never say my sons name. You never have. All i ever hear you say is ‘i didnt find out or I cant say’ Im actually tired of hearing your double talk in answering questions. What a joke you are. You know my son was a real AMERICAN, a WARRIOR, and a HERO, who was also protecting COWARD POLITICANS like you.”

“Hope you remember that,” Mrs. Terry added in her message to Holder before signing it: “PROUD MOM OF BRIAN A. TERRY.”

Brian Terry was murdered with a weapon his own government allowed to be sold to Mexican drug cartels via Operation Fast and Furious. Like Terry, about 300 Mexican citizens were also murdered with the guns Holder’s Justice Department gave to the drug cartels.

Nobody has been held accountable inside the Justice Department, and more than 100 congressmen, three U.S. senators, two sitting governors and all major Republican presidential candidates have demanded that Holder step down in the wake of the scandal. Holder has time and again refused to hold anybody accountable and has refused to step down himself

Holder’s fantastical claim about ‘Fast and Furious’

Philosophers and poets have argued for at least three millennia about who is more valuable. Poets claim they tell tales that inspire men to do things they would otherwise never accomplish. But philosophers argue that this requires the acceptance of obvious fantasies, thus leading men away from the truth. Judging by what Attorney General Eric Holder has been asking Congress and the American people to believe regarding what and when he knew about Operation Fast and Furious, we think he is telling tales that lead away from the truth.

Fast and Furious is the Justice Department program that allowed thousands of weapons to be sold in 2009 to known buyers for Mexican drug cartels in the hope that the tainted guns would show up at future crime scenes. The department’s cockeyed theory was that the “walked” weapons would enable authorities to tie the drug bosses to specific crimes in the United States and Mexico. Unfortunately, the bureaucrats lost track of the weapons until it was too late.

Now Holder wants Americans to believe an obvious fantasy, namely that he didn’t know about Fast and Furious until witch-hunting House Republicans made it a highly charged partisan issue a few months ago. But after reviewing new emails made public by the Justice Department last Friday, it seems clear that accepting Holder’s claim at face value would be credulous in the extreme.

He is scheduled to appear Thursday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The first question for Holder will concern a series of emails sent in the immediate aftermath of the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry on Dec. 15, 2010. The emails make clear that Monty Wilkinson, then Holder’s deputy chief of staff, was informed by U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke of Terry’s death, and that weapons found on the scene were bought in Phoenix and were among those in “the investigation we were going to talk about.”

Other documents obtained by the committee make clear that the investigation in question was Fast and Furious. The emails also establish that Wilkinson and other senior Justice Department officials in Washington were briefed on the program shortly after Terry’s murder. In other words, within days, if not hours, of Terry’s death, it was known at the highest levels of the Justice Department that he was killed by guns sold with the full knowledge of federal officials who then lost track of them.

It is simply inconceivable that Wilkinson did not inform others in the Justice Department, including Holder, about these facts. Regardless of the political damage that such a scandal would cause, Wilkinson should have made informing Holder a top priority. Doing anything less was at the least gross negligence. This is even more the point with Holder: Either he actually knew about Fast and Furious months before he told Congress he did, or he didn’t know when he should have. No wonder nearly 100 House members have signed a resolution of no confidence in Holder.

Fast & Furious update: Holder’s deputy CoS briefed in December 2010.

There’s been a lot of commentary, obviously, about the information found in the latest Department of Justice Friday afternoon email dump with regards to the administration’s catastrophic Operation Fast & Furious. For those who need a reminder, OF&F was a program by which political appointees in the Obama administration ignored federal rules and basic common sense in order to facilitate the illegal resale of firearms to Mexican narco-terrorist groups. This was not done so much without proper safeguards as it was done with essentially no safeguards at all; and the program only stopped when OF&F guns appeared at the murder scene of Border Agent Brian Terry’s. Since then, the Justice Department in general – and Attorney General Eric Holder in particular – have been spinning this very much as their careers depended on it, going to far as to claim that they were unaware of the very problem until about the same time that it entered the public consciousness.

These emails contradict that narrative: as of yet, however, they do not convict the Attorney General of being anything except a slack-jawed mouth-breather who was and is so intellectually incurious that he apparently spends his entire work day locked in his office, rocking back and forth on his chair, and humming tunelessly. Or, to break the monotony, occasionally drool.

While this defense may seem undignified of Holder: hey, it beats going to jail.

Let me explain what the emails say. They show that Holder’s then-deputy Chief of Staff (this is what NPR calls an ‘aide’) Monty Wilkinson was informed of the connection between Operation Fast & Furious and Agent Terry’s death the day after Terry died. This would be expected to directly contradict Holder’s claim that he only knew about the operation several weeks before Congress started asking pointed questions. For that matter, it would also directly contradict Holder’s later revision that he only knew about OF&F a couple of months prior (that latter will cover somebody until about February or so; it won’t stretch to the previous year). However, back in October we learned that emails had been circulating – and sent to AG Holder – discussing the doomed operation; Holder’s response to that was that he did not read the emails, and his response to this will probably be that he did not get briefed by his staff. That would make him about the only person in the Department of Justice who was not briefed. Hence the ‘slack-jawed, drooling incompetent’ thing earlier: right now, Holder’s only hope for avoiding the need for a Presidential pardon is to look like a buffoon. And absent an email coming from Holder himself on this matter, he has a better chance than you may think of getting away with it. God knows that this administration is well-stocked with incompetent buffoons.

Let me finish this up by telling you what I think really happened with Operation Fast & Furious. I think what really happened was that, back in 2009, the new crop of political appointees in the Department of Justice got on board, realized that BATF & DEA operations were actually nothing like they’re portrayed as being in the movies, and then decided to ‘fix’ that by setting up flashy cowboy operations. Being as ignorant of existing procedures as a hog is ignorant of calculus, they came up with a plan to boost illegal gun sale arrests by boosting illegal gun sales, and merrily ignored the increasingly-panicky requests from the people on the scene who had to try to make this policy work. Because the people on the scene were always going to make sure that the plan succeeded, right? – No matter how stupid the plan was. After all, it was the people on the scene’s careers at risk, too. Simple self-interest would suffice to ensure a favorable result, in other words.

And that attitude might even have worked. It is the nature of bureaucracies to divide up blame and translate individual petty ambitions and goals into a never explicitly defined consensus policy that conducts business, more or less, while managing to avoid offending too many people. And that is honestly not the worst thing in the world, particularly when you contemplate the governing styles of barbarians. But the thing is this: we tolerate bureaucratic shenanigans right up to the moment that someone entangled in them getskilled. When that happens, the natural inclination of the American people is to find the person in charge, and make a salutary example of him or her. And all the career bureaucrats and/or government workers who had been previously eager to make a bad policy work somehow will now be equally eager to make sure that they don’t get blamed for a decision that was frankly above their pay grade anyway. Thus the unseemly scramble that we’ve seen here.

I like this scenario, for several reasons. One, it doesn’t require any kind of conspiracy theory (honestly, the caliber of political appointees under this administration isn’t really up to the task of carrying off a successful conspiracy) about wanting to take guns away to work. Holder’s Justice Department might have thought that they were fighting the illegal gun trade this way. They were stupid, wrong, and got people killed: move on. Two, it doesn’t actually require it be proven that Attorney General Holder was directly linked to it. If his management style really is to not read the memos on his desk and not listen to his staff briefings, then he needs to resign anyway, and to take his senior staff with them. People got killed: move on. Third and last, if it does turn out that we have proof of either a conspiracy and/or Holder’s direct involvement in the operation then we can continue to proceed. Put another way: the facts on the ground are already damning enough to justify a thoroughgoing purge of the Justice Department’s political appointees, starting with the Attorney General and working our way down.

I mean, I understand that it’d be fun to see Holder marched off to jail, but it’s not going to happen: Obama would just pardon him anyway…

Ariz. House to probe gun trafficking investigation

PHOENIX (AP)Arizona legislators plan to review a controversial federal law enforcement investigation into weapons trafficking in Arizona.

State House Speaker Andy Tobin is creating a special House committee to investigate the Fast and Furious operation.

Tobin’s office says the study will examine the impact on the state and its residents and whether Fast and Furious violated any state laws.

Fast and Furious was intended to identify and prosecute major weapons traffickers but it resulted in federal agents losing track of weapons that later ended up at crime scenes in Mexico and the United States.

The committee is headed by Republican Rep. David Burnell Smith of Carefree, and Tobin says the committee will have subpoena power and is to submit a report by March 30.

LAS VEGAS — Fox News has reported, and this column has confirmed that Patrick J. Cunningham, chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s office in Phoenix, will invoke his right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment, and not testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform or its investigators about his role in, or knowledge about, Operation Fast and Furious.

This column reported the Cunningham story yesterday. Today it is likely to be on the minds of many people in the firearms industry who feel wrongly smeared by the Obama administration over gun trafficking to Mexican drug cartels. They are meeting here for the final day of the 2012 Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show.

In the year since the investigation began, it has been revealed that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Phoenix encouraged firearms retailers to allow gun running suspects to purchase large quantities of firearms — even while the gun dealers were expressing alarms — and then providing false information to Senator Charles Grassley in February of last year that no guns were being allowed to walk.

This stunning new development, reported first by Fox News’ William La Jeunesse late Thursday, is already being amplified by an appearance by South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy, a member of the Oversight committee and former federal prosecutor. In an interview with Fox Business reporter Lou Dobbs, Gowdy discussed the problems that the committee has faced.

Patrick J. Cunningham informed the House Oversight Committee late Thursday through his attorney that he will use the Fifth Amendment protection.—Fox News

Now that a subpoena was issued to a high-ranking Justice Department official in Phoenix, it signaled that Committee Chairman Darrell Issa is serious about getting to the bottom of Operation Fast and Furious.

In a letter to Chairman Issa, (provided here by Fox News) Cunningham’s attorney, Tobin J. Romero, said this:

Finally, as a professional courtesy, and to avoid needless preparation by the Committee and its staff for a deposition next week, I am writing to advise you that my client is going to assert his constitutional privilege not to be compelled to be a witness against himself. The Supreme Court has held that “one of the basic functions of the privilege is to protect innocent.” Grunewald v. United States, 353 U.S. 391,421(1957); see also Ohio v. Reiner,532 U.S.17 (2001) (per curiam). The evidence described above shows that my client is, in fact, innocent, but he has been ensnared by the unfortunate circumstances in which he now stands between two branches of government. I will therefore be instructing him to assert his constitutional privilege.—Tobin J. Romero, attorney for Patrick Cunningham

It is the first time in the investigation that a potential witness has publicly taken the Fifth Amendment and refused to testify. What signal does it send? To Mike Vanderboegh at Sipsey Street Irregulars, one of the two people responsible for originally breaking the Fast and Furious story one year ago, it suggests that the House committee, and the Obama White House, may be content to focus on officials in Phoenix at the U.S. Attorney’s office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, rather than push the investigation to explore the FBI’s alleged involvement. Vanderboegh offers his thoughts here. My colleague, National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea, writes about it here.

In his interview with Dobbs, Gowdy focused on Attorney General Eric Holder, who is scheduled to testify before the Oversight Committee on Feb. 2. Holder has already declined to provide copies of e-mails and other documents to the committee. Gowdy had this to say:

You shouldn’t have to subpoena or threaten contempt with the top law enforcement official in the country. You just shouldn’t have to do it. But if he’s not going to provide his e-mails and the documents that we have a legitimate right to see then we’ll have to do what we’ll have to do.—Congressman Trey Gowdy

Cunningham’s refusal to appear before the committee or its investigators does not signal an end to the Fast and Furious investigation, which may still become a presidential campaign issue, especially now that a key figure has invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. Gowdy was clear about that, and he publicly cautioned Holder against any further stalling.

Anyone who thought this was a political exercise that would ebb and flow with the vagaries of politics is wrong… If the attorney general thinks he can give an interview with the New York Times and al of this will go away, he will be sadly mistaken on the second of February.”—Congressman Trey Gowdy

‘Fast and Furious’ Linked to Immunity Deal Between U.S. and Sinaloa Cartel, Trafficking Defendant Alleges in Court Papers

In this Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 picture, an American flag on a resident’s home waves in the breeze near a U.S. Border Patrol truck blocking the road leading to a search area near where U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was killed northwest of Nogales, Ariz.  (AP Photo/Arizona Daily Star, Greg Bryan)

(CNSNews.com) – An alleged Mexican drug trafficker awaiting trial in a Chicago federal court claims that the notorious Sinaloa cartel received weapons from “Operation Fast and Furious” under an alleged immunity agreement that the U.S. government made with cartel leaders, in exchange for information on rival gangs.

The defendant in a trafficking case before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Vicente Jesus Zambada-Niebla, also claims the immunity deal allowed the criminal cartel to “continue to smuggle tons of illicit drugs” into the United States.

He wants the U.S. government to provide documents relating to the botched gun running sting operation along the southwest border, arguing that it would benefit his defense.

Operation Fast and Furious, which began in September 2009, saw the Phoenix office of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives supervise the sale of guns to straw purchasers with the intent of tracing the guns to Mexican drug trafficking organizations and prosecuting their members. The ATF allowed about 2,000 guns to be sold in this manner.

The operation came under congressional scrutiny after it was linked to the December 2010 murder of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry at the hands of Mexican bandits.

An investigative report, spearheaded by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), found that most of the weapons provided to Mexican criminals under the operation were going to the Sinaloa cartel, arguably one of the world’s largest drug trafficking organizations.

In a court pleading filed last July, Zambada-Niebla made the claims about an immunity deal.

“Mr. Zambada-Niebla believes that the documentation that he requests will confirm that the weapons received by Sinaloa Cartel members and its leaders in Operation ‘Fast & Furious’ were provided under the agreement entered into between the United States government and [a Mexican lawyer] on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel that is the subject of his defense …,” it said.

“Mr. Zambada-Niebla believes that the documentation will also provide evidence showing that the United States government has a policy and pattern of providing benefits, including immunity, to cartel leaders, including the Sinaloa Cartel and their members, who are willing to provide information against rival drug cartels.”

The defendant argued that he is protected from federal prosecution for trafficking drugs into the U.S. between 2004 and 2009 under an alleged immunity deal struck between the U.S. government and Sinaloa leaders.

According to court documents, Zambada-Niebla claims that the immunity deal provided the cartel’s leadership with “carte blanche to continue to smuggle tons of illicit drugs into Chicago and the rest of the United States” in exchange for information on rival drug cartels.

U.S. prosecutors deny the existence of such an immunity deal between the U.S. government and the cartel.

Nevertheless, the U.S. government last September filed a motion to invoke the Classified Information Procedures Act, which is aimed at assuring that national security information stemming from criminal cases – such as details associated with CIA operations – are not leaked to the public during court proceedings.

In a court pleading filed in September, U.S. prosecutors claimed that Zambada-Niebla’s allegations about Fast and Furious have no merit.

“Defendant requests all information in the possession of the U.S. government related to an ATF investigation referred to as ‘Fast and Furious’…” it said. “Defendants request related to Fast and Furious … and other unrelated matters are gratuitous and wholly unrelated to any legitimate discovery issues in this case.”

Zambada-Niebla, who was arrested in Mexico in March 2009 and extradited to the U.S. eleven months later, is accused of smuggling tons of cocaine and heroin into the U.S.

He claims he was working on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration, FBI, and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, court documents show.

The defendant’s pleading highlighted a July 2011 letter sent by Issa and Grassley to Attorney General Eric Holder, “suggesting that multiple United States agencies were employing as informants members of Mexican drug organizations.”

“The evidence seems to indicate that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons, but that tax payers’ dollars in the form of informant payments, may have financed those engaging in such activities,” the pleading added.

This is a letter from a 95 year old veteran living in Hawaii — an interesting viewpoint.

Even Snopes tried its hardest to say it was false. but at the end, they had to declare it true….
Snopes checked and approved…
This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body, he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now. He dictated this letter to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

Dear President Obama

My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don’t believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos’n Mate. Now I live in a “rest home” located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.

So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

I can’t figure out what country you are the president of. You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
” We’re no longer a Christian nation
” America is arrogant” – (Your wife even announced to the world,” America is mean- spirited. ” Please tell her to try preaching that nonsense to 23 generations of our war dead buried all over the globe who died for no other reason than to free a whole lot of strangers from tyranny and hopelessness.)

I’d say shame on the both of you, but I don’t think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House..

After 9/11 you said,”America hasn’t lived up to her ideals.”

Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn’t mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.

I don’t think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don’t, I’ll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue.. You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.

And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don’t want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don’t mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don’t want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you’re the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you’re not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you’re thinking of.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president. You’re not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That’s not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now. And I sure as hell don’t want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle…

Sincerely,
Harold B. Estes

Obama Targeting Police Nationwide to Divert from Fast and Furious

Town Hall

Rachel Alexander (Arizona Blogger)

Either there has been a huge increase in discrimination by law enforcement during the Obama administration, or Obama is targeting law enforcement for politically motivated reasons. In the current era of heightened sensitivity to racism and police brutality, it makes no sense that abuses by law enforcement are increasing. The U.S. Department of Justice’s sudden flurry of investigations finding massive amounts of discrimination and abuses by police agencies around the country is coincidentally occurring at the same time the U.S. Department of Justice is undergoing a highly publicized Congressional investigation into Fast and Furious.

Law enforcement is a natural target for the left, which often seems to prefer criminals over the police. Alleging vague charges of racism or racial profiling is becoming one of the most prevalent ways the left dishonestly demonizes and discredits its opponents. Made-up charges of racism are difficult to defend against, because almost any difference in treatment between two people of different ethnic backgrounds can be blamed on racism with no way of proving otherwise. You cannot get inside someone’s head to prove that he had no racist thoughts; it is one person’s word against another’s.

This latest round of politically motivated investigations comes on the heels of the Obama administration suing Arizona, Utah, Alabama and South Carolina over their tough new laws against illegal immigration. Those lawsuits are mostly based on unfounded grounds of racial profiling; Arizona’s law specifically includes a provision prohibiting racial profiling. The constant barrage of lawsuits is costing taxpayers exorbitant amounts of money. They’re paying double; once to fund Obama’s lawsuits through their federal taxes and again to defend against the lawsuits and pay any penalties through their local taxes.

The flurry of attacks on law enforcement agencies began last week on December 15, when the DOJ announced vague racial profiling accusations against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The DOJ claims that the agency racially profiles more than any other police agency around the country. However, itrefuses to release the “statistical study” on which the findings are supposedly based. It is widely thought that Arpaio was targeted in retaliation for enforcing laws against illegal immigration. Since Arizona has such a high percentage of Latinos, it is easy to make people think there could be discrimination. The DOJ stripped the agency of its ability to screen for illegal immigrants through the 287(g) program and is ordering Arpaio to make numerous changes, such as setting up policies against discrimination. This is redundant considering there are so many policies, rules, and laws prohibiting discrimination at every level of government.

The next day, on December 16, the DOJ released a report claiming there was evidence of “biased policing” by the Seattle Police Department, and that officers routinely and illegally use excessive force during arrests. The DOJ ordered the agency to implement onerous new regulations and procedures.

This week, on December 19, the DOJ issued a scathing report alleging numerous civil rights violations against Latinos by the East Haven Police Department in Connecticut. Six to 15 police officers may be arrested for civil rights violations.

On Tuesday, the DOJ ordered the town of Rome, Wisconsin to pay a police officer $351,891 because the police department allegedly discriminated against her because she was female. The DOJ filed a complaint in federal court alleging the town violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The DOJ is currently investigating the Miami Police Department over allegations of racial discrimination in the shootings of seven black men. The Meridian Police Department and Lauderdale County Juvenile Detention Center are under investigation by the DOJ for alleged discriminatory treatment of three black youths.

There are likely more investigations on the way. The DOJ is considering launching a civil rights investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department in New Mexico, which some believe is retaliation over Mayor Richard Berry requiring the police to check the citizenship of everyone arrested. The ACLU and other activist groups are demanding a federal investigation of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department over the shooting of a black army veteran. At least two dozen members of Congress are demanding that the DOJ investigate the New York Police Department over allegedly profiling Muslims.

This is not right. The federal government should not be suing local governments. It is trampling on the rights of states and localities to conduct their own business. The Constitution grants the federal government very limited powers; the Tenth Amendment states that all powers not specifically assigned to the federal government shall be left to the states. The federal government is micromanaging local law enforcement. If there really are problems with law enforcement, Congress or local legislatures should look into them, not the partisan Executive Branch.

The Obama administration knows that investigations and lawsuits will tie up the resources of smaller law enforcement agencies so they will be unable to accomplish much else. Sheriff Joe Arpaio will not have anymore resources left to enforce illegal immigration laws and other laws the left would prefer to see ignored.

The DOJ is in no place to be criticizing other law enforcement agencies. 60 members of Congress are calling for Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation over Fast and Furious, and 75 have signed onto a House resolution vote of no confidence. But by turning the focus towards alleged wrongdoing from large police agencies like the Seattle Police Department and popular Sheriff Joe Arpaio, there will be less media coverage and public scrutiny of Fast and Furious.

Launching dubious investigations for political reasons must be curbed. The U.S. is going bankrupt. Obama is using money we don’t have to attack targets that will earn him favor with his far left supporters. As the first black president, Obama should be moving the country in a direction away from racism. Instead, he is stirring it up. Congress should expand its investigation of Fast and Furious to this transparent attempt by the Obama administration to deflect away from it.

Holder Torches Sheriff Joe, Accuses Him of Civil Rights Violations

PHOENIX (AP) – The federal government issued a scathing report Thursday that outlines how Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio‘s office has committed a wide range of civil rights violations against Latinos, including a pattern of racial profiling and discrimination and carrying out heavy-handed immigration patrols based on racially charged citizen complaints.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press ahead of its release, is a result of the U.S. Justice Department‘s three-year investigation of Arpaio’s office amid complaints of racial profiling and a culture of bias at the agency’s top level.

The Justice Department’s conclusions in the civil probe mark the federal government’s harshest rebuke of a national political fixture who has risen to prominence for his immigration crackdowns and became coveted endorsement among candidates in the GOP presidential field.

Apart from the civil rights probe, a federal grand jury also has been investigating Arpaio’s office on criminal abuse-of-power allegations since at least December 2009 and is specifically examining the investigative work of the sheriff’s anti-public corruption squad.

The civil rights report said federal authorities will continue to investigate complaints of deputies using excessive force against Latinos, whether the sheriff’s office failed to provide adequately police services in Hispanic communities and a large number of sex-crimes cases that were assigned to the agency but weren’t followed up on or investigated at all.

The report took the sheriff’s office to task for launching immigration patrols, known as “sweeps,” based on complaints that Latinos were merely gathering near a business without committing crimes. Federal authorities single out Arpaio himself and said his office, known as MCSO, has no clear policies to guard against the violations, even after he changed some of his top aides earlier this year.

“Arpaio’s own actions have helped nurture MCSO’s culture of bias,” wrote Thomas Perez, who heads the Justice Department’s civil rights division, adding that the sheriff frequently gave such racially charged letters to some of his top aides and saved them in his own files.

“MCSO is broken in a number of critical respects. The problems are deeply rooted in MCSO’s culture,” he said Thursday.

The Justice Department’s expert on measuring racial profiling said it’s the most egregious case of racial profiling in the nation that he has seen or reviewed in professional literature, Perez said.

Investigators interviewed more than 400 people, including Arpaio, reviewed thousands of documents and toured county jails as part of its probe, he said.

If the sheriff’s office doesn’t turn around its policies and practices, the federal government could pull millions of dollars of federal funding.

Arpaio’s office did not immediately respond to AP requests for comment.

The report will require Arpaio to set up effective policies against discrimination, improve training and make other changes that would be monitored for compliance by a judge. Arpaio faces a Jan. 4 deadline for saying whether he wants to work out an agreement. If not, the federal government will sue him and let a judge decide the complaint.

Arpaio, the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America, has long denied the racial profiling allegation, saying people are stopped if deputies have probable cause to believe they have committed crimes and that deputies later find many of them are illegal immigrants.

Arpaio has built his reputation on jailing inmates in tents and dressing them in pink underwear, selling himself to voters as unceasingly tough on crime and pushing the bounds of how far local police can go to confront illegal immigration.

The report also said he and some top staffers tried to silence people who have spoken out against the sheriff’s office by arresting people without cause, filing meritless lawsuits against opponents and starting investigations of critics.

One example cited by the Justice Department is former top Arpaio aide David Hendershott, who filed bar complaints against attorneys critical of the agency along with bringing judicial complaints against judges who were at odds with the sheriff. All complaints were dismissed.

The anti-corruption squad’s cases against two county officials and a judge collapsed in court before going to trial and have been criticized by politicians at odds with the sheriff as trumped up. Arpaio has defended the investigations as a valid attempt at rooting out corruption in county government.

The civil rights report said Latinos are four to nine times more likely to be stopped in traffic stops in Maricopa County than non-Latinos and that the agency’s immigration policies treat Latinos as if they are all in the country illegally. Deputies on the immigrant-smuggling squad stop and arrest Latino drivers without good cause, the investigation found.

A review done as part of the investigation found that 20 percent of traffic reports handled by Arpaio’s immigrant-smuggling squad from March 2006 to March 2009 were stops – almost all involving Latino drivers – that were done without reasonable suspicion. The squad’s stops rarely led to smuggling arrests.

Deputies are encouraged to make high-volume traffic stops in targeted locations. There were Latinos who were in the U.S. legally who were arrested or detained without cause during the sweeps, according to the report.

During the sweeps, deputies flood an area of a city – in some cases, heavily Latino areas – over several days to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders. Illegal immigrants accounted for 57 percent of the 1,500 people arrested in the 20 sweeps conducted by his office since January 2008, according to figures provided by Arpaio’s office.

Police supervisors, including at least one smuggling-squad supervisor, often used county accounts to send emails that demeaned Latinos to fellow sheriff’s managers, deputies and volunteers in the sheriff’s posse. One such email had a photo of a mock driver’s license for a fictional state called “Mexifornia.”

The report said that the sheriff’s office launched an immigration operation two weeks after the sheriff received a letter in August 2009 letter about a person’s dismay over employees of a McDonald’s in the Phoenix suburb of Sun City who didn’t speak English. The tip laid out no criminal allegations. The sheriff wrote back to thank the writer “for the info,” said he would look into it and forwarded it to a top aide with a note of “for our operation.”

Federal investigators focused heavily on the language barriers in Arpaio’s jails.

Latino inmates with limited English skills were punished for failing to understand commands in English by being put in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day or keeping prisoners locked down in their jail pods for as long as 72 hours without a trip to the canteen area or making nonlegal phone calls.

The report said some jail officers used racial slurs for Latinos when talking among themselves and speaking to inmates.

Detention officers refused to accept forms requesting basic daily services and reporting mistreatment when the documents were completed in Spanish and pressured Latinos with limited English skills to sign forms that implicate their legal rights without language assistance.

The agency pressures Latinos with limited English skills to sign forms by yelling at them and keeping them in uncomfortably cold cells for long periods of time.

The Justice Department said it hadn’t yet established a pattern of alleged wrongdoing by the sheriff’s office in the three areas where they will continue to investigation: complaints of excessive force against Latinos, botched sex-crimes cases and immigration efforts that have hurt the agency’s trust with the Hispanic community.

Federal authorities will continue to investigate whether the sheriff’s office has limited the willingness of witnesses and victims to report crimes or talk to Arpaio’s office.

“MCSO has done almost nothing to build such a relationship with Mariciopa County’s Latino residents,” Perez wrote.

Obama administration launches hotline to help illegals detained by states

By Alex Pappas

The Daily Caller

12/29/2011

The Obama administration has set up a toll-free hotline to help illegal immigrants detained by law enforcement at the state and local levels.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency announced Thursday that the hotline is being launched to make sure detainees understand “their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights.”

A drop house was raided by the Arizona Department of Public Safety along with other law enforcement jurisdictions including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, yielding nine suspected illegal immigrants, shown here, and three suspected human smugglers Thursday, April 29, 2010, in Phoenix. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

Those arrested under immigration laws can also use the government hotline if they think they are actually an American citizen or victim of a crime. The hotline will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The agency also announced the implementation of a new detainer form, which includes instructions on how detainees can make civil rights or civil liberties complaints against immigration officials.

The agency said the forms, which require basic information on detainees, “help ensure that individuals who are convicted of criminal charges or have previously been removed are not released back into the community to potentially commit more crimes.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

ICE establishes hotline for detained individuals, issues new detainer form

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sent this bulletin at 12/29/2011 12:47 PM EST

WASHINGTON — As part of a broader effort to improve our immigration enforcement process and prioritize resources to focus on threats to public safety, repeat immigration law violators, recent border entrants, and immigration fugitives while continuing to strengthen oversight of the nation’s immigration detention system and facilitate legal immigration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today announced new measures to ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights.

The new measures include a new detainer form and the launch of a toll-free hotline — (855) 448-6903 — that detained individuals can call if they believe they may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime. The hotline will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by ICE personnel at the Law Enforcement Support Center. Translation services will be available in several languages from 7 a.m. until midnight (Eastern) seven days a week. ICE personnel will collect information from the individual and refer it to the relevant ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Field Office for immediate action.

The new form also includes:

• A request that the law enforcement agency (LEA) provide the subject of the detainer a copy of the detainer form and includes a notice advising the subject that ICE intends to assume custody. The notice informs these individuals that ICE has requested the LEA maintain custody beyond the time when they would have otherwise been released by the state or local law enforcement authorities based on their criminal charges or convictions. The notice also includes Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese and Vietnamese translations.

• Further emphasis that LEAs may only hold an individual for a period not to exceed 48 hours (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays). It also advises individuals that if ICE does not take them into custody within the 48 hours, they should contact the LEA or entity that is holding them to inquire about their release from state or local custody.

• Directions for individuals who may have a civil rights or civil liberties complaint regarding ICE activities.

• The new form allows ICE to make the detainer operative only upon the individual’s conviction of the offense for which he or she was arrested.

• The new form makes clear that the existence of a detainer should not impact or prejudice the individual’s conditions of detention, including matters related to the individual’s custody classification, work or quarter assignments.

An immigration detainer (Form I-247) is a notice that DHS issues to federal, state and local LEAs to inform them that ICE intends to assume custody of an individual in the LEA’s custody and to request that the LEA notify ICE as soon as possible prior to the time when LEA would otherwise release the individual.

Detainers help ensure that individuals who are convicted of criminal charges or have previously been removed are not released back into the community to potentially commit more crimes. Detainers are critical tools in assisting ICE’s identification and removal of criminal aliens, immigration fugitives, illegal re-entrants, recent border crossers and others who have no legal right to remain in the United States.

DOJ Confirms Mexican Drug Cartels Operating Inside U.S.

In yet another compelling reason to beef up border security, a new federal court case outlines how Mexican drug cartels have teamed up with violent street gangs to operate inside the United States.

The case involves dozens of members of the Barrio Azteca gang charged with operating a massive drug-trafficking and money-laundering enterprise. A handful of members have already been convicted and were sentenced in Texas this week, while others face trial next spring for racketeering, murder, drug offenses, money laundering and obstruction of justice.

Information released by the Department of Justice (DOJ) this week says Barrio Azteca is also responsible for the March 2010 murders in Juarez of a U.S. Consulate employee, her husband and another associate. Details of the gang’s vast operations in Mexico and the U.S. illustrate how violence has gone well beyond the southern border despite assurances from Homeland Security officials that the region is safer than ever.

According to the DOJ documents members and associates of the Barrio Azteca have engaged in a host of criminal activity since 2003, including drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, kidnapping and murder. The gang makes money by importing heroin, cocaine and marijuana into the United States from Mexico, according to the DOJ. Some of the profits are used to help incarcerated gang members pay for defense lawyers or fines while a chunk of it is used to buy more drugs, guns and ammunition.

This is a sophisticated enterprise operating on American soil with money from Mexican drug proceeds. The DOJ says the gang has a militaristic command structure and includes captains, lieutenants, sergeants, soldiers and associates – all with the purpose of maintaining power and enriching its members and associates through drug trafficking, money laundering, extortion, intimidation, violence, threats of violence and murder.

These sorts of gangs have been working in the U.S. for years, according to various federal reports that have provided alarming statistics about the criminal enterprises. As far back as 2008, the DOJ’s National Drug Intelligence Center revealed how Mexican drug trafficking organizations represent the greatest crime threat in the U.S. Two years later, a separate reportsaid Mexican drug cartels have expanded into every region of the country, including idyllic rural areas.

A few months ago Texas state authorities published yet another report documenting how Mexican drug cartels havetransformed parts of the state into a war zone where shootings, beheadings, kidnappings and murders are common. It further revealed that drug-cartel violence is so severe that Texas counties along the Mexican border are under attack around the clock.

Sheriff Joe to Eric Holder: ‘PROVE IT!’ (Demands DOJ Show ‘Evidence’ of ‘Racial Profiling’)

Barack Obama’s Justice Department has accused Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his deputies of “racial profiling”. Now Sheriff Joe has just one thing to say to Attorney General Eric Holder…

“Prove it”.

In a high-profile press conference in Phoenix on December 15th – which many people believe was hastily arranged to distract attention from the 1-year anniversary of Border Agent Brian Terry’s murder – DOJ Civil Rights Division head Thomas Perez released a 22-page complaint accusing the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office of “discriminating” against Hispanics as part of his well-known crackdowns on illegal aliens, and “Tent City” detention facilities. However, the DOJ failed to provide any evidence to back up their claims, only threats.

In an interview, Arpaio said the complaint was nothing more than anecdotal and didn’t prove there are systematic sheriff’s department policies aimed at depriving Hispanics in Maricopa County of their civil rights.

“If Eric Holder has evidence that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has engaged in systematic violations of the civil rights of Hispanics, then show me the evidence,” Arpaio said.

Sheriff Joe’s comments follow a 38-page response to the DOJ complaint by Arpaio attorney Joseph J. Popolizio, in which he made it clear that the sheriff was willing to cooperate with Holder and the DOJ,but only if the DOJ revealed to the MCSO and the public its proof.

“Sheriff Joseph M. Arpaio and the MCSO are certainly interested in constructive dialogue, but constructive dialogue can only occur if the DOJ provides the facts and information on which it bases its findings,” Popolizio wrote.

The reply from Justice displayed their typical arrogance: “If MCSO wants to debate the facts instead of fixing the problems stated in our findings, we will do so by way of litigation,” DOJ said in the statement.

Was Arpaio concerned that the DOJ might take him and his sheriff’s department to federal court? No way.

“If the Justice Department wants to take me to court, I’m ready,” Arpaio said. “I report to the people of Maricopa County,” Arpaio said, “and I intend to continue enforcing the immigration laws of the state of Arizona as long as I hold this office.”

AZ SCHOOL DISTRICT SUSPENDS CONTROVERSIAL MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM

Ariz studies

The Tucson Unified School District voted late Tuesday to end its controversial Mexican-American studies program, after part of its state funding was set to be cut off on the grounds that the curriculum violated state law.

The school district voted 4-1 to dismantle the program, meaning classes will be suspended immediately, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal said Friday he was cutting the district’s state funding by 10 percent until it came into compliance, amounting to more than $1 million per month and leaving the district facing an immediate $4.9 million shortfall.

The state had long been at odds with the Tucson district over the program, with state officials contending that the classes promote reverse racism. An Arizona law passed last year — which directly targeted Tucson’s program — bans classes designed for a particular ethnic group or which “promote resentment toward a race of class of people.”

The district appealed Huppenthal’s original conclusion that the program violated state law, but an administrative law judge in December upheld his decision, clearing the way for funding cuts. The board opted not to pursue the matter further, citing prohibitive legal costs.

According to the Daily Star, all district board members who voted to suspend the program support revamping either the program or individual classes to make them more comprehensive and include the contributions of all ethnicities.

ARIZONA ORDERS FUNDING WITHHELD FROM SCHOOL DISTRICT OVER MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM

The Arizona Department of Education on Friday ordered severe funding cuts for the Tucson Unified School District over its Mexican-American studies curriculum, saying the ethnic studies program is a violation of state law.

John Huppenthal, Arizona’s superintendent of public instruction, said he’s cutting state funding by 10 percent and making it retroactive to August, leaving the Tucson district facing an immediate $4.9 million funding loss and a more than $14 million loss by June, the Tucson Citizen reported.

The state has long been at odds with the Tucson district over the Mexican-American program, with state officials contending the classes promote reverse racism, according to the Citizen. An Arizona law passed last year — which directly targeted Tucson’s program — bans classes designed for a particular ethnic group or which “promote resentment toward a race or class of people.”

Huppenthal told the newspaper he gave the school district ample time to improve its program and address the state’s concerns, but finally had no choice but to impose penalties.

“The district hasn’t dealt with the issue,” he told the Citizen. “The problems are so deep and so wide, it would be almost impossible to cure the program.”

In a statement, Huppenthal said the classes teach that “Latino minorities have been and continue to be oppressed by a Caucasian majority,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

Statement of Attorney General Holder on Increase in Law Enforcement Officer Fatalities

WASHINGTON – The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund today released preliminary fatality statistics for 2011, which show a 13 percent increase in the number of federal, state and local officers who died in the line of duty, from 153 in 2010 to 173 in 2011.  The data shows that 68 officers lost their lives in firearms-related incidents, 64 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents and 41 deaths were attributed to other causes.

“This is a devastating and unacceptable trend.  Each of these deaths is a tragic reminder of the threats that law enforcement officers face each day – and the fact that too many guns have fallen into the hands of those who are not legally permitted to possess them,” said Attorney General Eric Holder.  “Departments across the country have mourned the loss of too many dedicated colleagues and friends, but my colleagues and I at the Justice Department are determined to turn back this rising tide.  I want to assure the family members and loved ones who have mourned the loss of these heroes that we are responding to this year’s increased violence with renewed vigilance and will do everything within our power – and use every tool at our disposal – to keep our police officers safe.”

The Department of Justice is advancing officer safety with critical new programs including the Officer Safety Initiative, which provides training programs and information-sharing platforms.   In addition, in partnership with the Justice Department’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has established the Officer Safety & Wellness Working Group.  This forum gains and shares information and insight to help enhance programs, policies and initiatives related to officer safety and wellness.

The department also is standing behind its commitment to police officers with significant strategic investments to numerous officer safety programs, including BJA’s Bulletproof Vest Partnership program. Since January 2011, 16 officers have been saved due to protective vests purchased in part with funding from this program .   In FY 2011, the BJA reimbursed jurisdictions across the United States more than $23 million for 79,684 bullet- and stab-resistant vests.

In addition to this life-saving program, the department also is supporting officer safety through programs such as the Preventing Violence Against Law Enforcement and Ensuring Officer Resilience and Survivability ( VALOR) program.   VALOR is designed to prevent violence against law enforcement officers and ensure officer resilience and survivability following violent encounters during the course of their duties.  VALOR provides training and technical assistance to state, local and tribal law enforcement in a variety of ways, and will conduct and disseminate analysis of violent encounters in various forms, including after-action reviews and lessons learned publications. To date, 538 officers have been trained through the program, and more than 100 incidents where officers were forced to use their firearm have been analyzed.   VALOR also includes funding that has been allocated to develop training and technical assistance programs – and resources like the Officer Safety Toolkit, which the department released this year to help officers learn how to anticipate and survive violent encounters.  Since its release, approximately 5,000 print and electronic copies of the toolkit have been distributed nationwide.

The Justice Department also has made significant investments to help launch the Center for the Prevention of Violence Against the Police and to provide additional support for the families of law enforcement officers, especially in times of tragedy.  The department also has expanded its Smart Policing Initiative, which fights crime with innovative and evidence-based strategies, granting 16 new awards in FY2011 and bringing the total number of agencies participating to 31.

REPORT: OBAMA ADMIN WILL CIRCUMVENT CONGRESS WITH NEW ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION RULE

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Are you ready for even more Congressional criticism of the Obama administration? The White House is crafting plans surrounding a rule change to help reduce the time illegal immigrant spouses and children are separated from citizen relatives while they try to win legal status in the United States, a senior administration official said Thursday.

Currently, illegal immigrants must leave the country before they can ask the government to waive a three- to 10-year ban on legally coming back to the U.S. The length of the ban depends on how long they have lived in the U.S. without permission. The L.A. Times has more:

…Obama is attempting unilateral steps meant to bring about what he sees as an immigration system that is fairer and less destructive to families.

The proposal is likely to win plaudits from a crucial constituency in the 2012 election: Latinos.

Obama won two-thirds of the Latino vote in 2008, and he needs this fast-growing constituency energized and excited about his reelection.

(Related: Obama Administration Launches Free Hotline for Suspected Illegal Immigrants)

The official said the new rule would let children and spouses of citizens ask the government to decide on the waiver request before the illegal immigrant heads to his or her home country to apply for a visa. The illegal immigrants still must go home to finish the visa process to come back to the U.S., but getting the waiver ahead of time could reduce the time an illegal immigrant is out of the country.

ALLEN WEST SAYS HOLDER‘S USE OF THE ’RACE CARD‘ IS ’SLAP IN MY FACE AS A PROFESSIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN’

“I’m disgusted. I find it absolutely reprehensible because this is not about skin color. This is about your character. This is about your competence. This is about your ability to lead. And this is about potentially you having misled the Congress and the American people on this operation Fast and Furious,” Rep. Allen West (R-FL) told NRA News.

Why did Rep. West have such strong words for attorney general Eric Holder?

Recently, the calls for Holder‘s resignation on Capitol Hill have increased as the investigation into the ATF’s “Fast and Furious” gunrunning probe intensifies. Perhaps overwhelmed by the growing pressure, Holder tried to explain the that “more extreme segment” of his critics were going after him because of his race.

“This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him, both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that we’re both African-American,” Holder said in an interview with The New York Times.

However, many argue that race has nothing to do with the growing–and increasingly heated–criticism Holder has faced recently.

“I think it’s fair criticism. When you look at Fast and Furious … when you look at guns ending up in the hands of drug lords and criminals south of the border, I think that’s fair criticism,” J.C. Watts, a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma, told Fox News.

An African American himself, Watts warned against injecting race into the issue.

“I think it cheapens and it weakens the legitimate claims of racism,” he said. “I think racism is obviously alive and well, but I think it cheapens it when we so quickly and in such cavalier ways, we often jump to that. Now I‘m not saying that the attorney general’s being cavalier. … He probably honestly feels like that.”

Watts‘ criticism of Holder’s introduction of racism into the discussion pales in comparison to the words West had for the attorney general.

“It is a slap in my face as a professional African American member of Congress and a career military officer, that this gentleman who is the head of the Department of Justice is going to resort to that very nefarious theme of the race card,” West said.

Obama-administration-endangered-lives-to-justify-gun-control/

FAIRFAX, Va. –(Ammoland.com)- In all of my years fighting on behalf of the National Rifle Association to defend the Second Amendment, I never thought I would see a White House so vehemently opposed to gun ownership that it would be willing to arm violent criminals and endanger American lives in pursuit of a gun control agenda.

Readers will recall that a little over two months ago, in this same space, I wrote:

“I would like to believe that President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder — no matter how much they oppose our Second Amendment rights — would never break the law and endanger human lives in their mission to score political points against gun owners…

“However, to believe all of this, I would have to ignore a lot of facts.”

And now, according to new documents obtained by CBS News, we are faced with the fact that the Obama administration helped transfer illegal guns to drug cartels in Mexico to build a case for gun control — specifically, gun registration — here in America.

“If these reports are true, even by Washington standards this reaches a new level of arrogance and corruption,” remarked Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). Unfortunately, Sen. Cornyn is not exaggerating.

On July 14, 2010, Mark Chait, who served as Assistant Director for Field Operations for the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (BATFE) sent an email to Bill Newell, BATFE’s special agent in charge of operation “Fast and Furious.” Chait’s email said:

“Bill, can you see if these guns were all purchased from the same (licensed gun dealer) and at one time? We are looking at anecdotal cases to support a demand letter on long-gun sales. Thanks.”

Just six months later, after a press conference to announce arrests made in “Fast and Furious,” Chait emailed Newell again, saying:

“Bill–well done yesterday… (I)n light of our request for Demand letter 3, this case could be a strong supporting factor if we can determine how many multiple sales of long guns occurred during the course of this case.”

“Demand letter 3″ is a letter sent to U.S. firearms dealers in the four southwest border states, demanding that they register sales of more than one semi-automatic rifle to the same person within five business days.

Under its “Fast and Furious” operation, Obama’s BATFE had been forcing licensed firearms dealers to sell semi-automatic rifles to shady straw purchasers, who would then supply them to drug cartels in Mexico.

MAJOR MEXICAN CITY DISBANDS ENTIRE POLICE FORCE TO COMBAT CORRUPTION

(The Blaze/AP)– The entire police force in the major Gulf coast port city of Veracruz was dissolved on Wednesday, and Mexican officials sent the Navy in to patrol.

The Veracruz state government said the decision is part of an effort to root out police corruption and start from zero in the state’s largest city.

State spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off. At a press conference, she said they can apply for jobs in a state police force, but must meet stricter standards for an agency with officers “who are better trained and more committed and who can deliver under our current security circumstances.”

Armed marines barricaded police headquarters Wednesday and Navy helicopters were flying above the city where 35 bodies were dumped in September. It was one of the worst gang attacks of Mexico’s drug war.

The change was agreed upon Monday by Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte and federal Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire.

Mexico’s army has taken over police operations several times before, notably in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and the border state of Tamaulipas. But Veracruz becomes the first state to completely disband a large police department and use marines as law enforcers. There are about 2,400 marines in the state of Veracruz.

Dominguez said the Navy operations will last only until the state can train more of its own police. Duarte already had disbanded a police force in the state’s capital of Xalapa, but in that case state agents immediately replaced city police.

President Felipe Calderon has pushed an ambitious process for vetting all of Mexico’s 460,000 police officers. His administration allocated $331 million for 200 cities to train and re-equip municipal police forces.

Governors have complained they lack the resources to ensure their police forces are clean.

Veracruz is a common route for drugs and migrants coming from the south. It was first dominated by the Gulf Cartel, and then its former armed wing, the Zetas, took over after the two split. The state saw a rise in crime this spring after a government offensive in neighboring Tamaulipas scared drug criminals away to Veracruz.

But the dumping of the 35 bodies shocked Mexico as it turned the port into a battleground between the Zetas and a gang aligned with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

ERIC HOLDER “REGRETS” FALSE LETTER TO CONGRESS, BLAMES WHITE PEOPLE.

US Attorney General Eric Holder is feeling the heat over Fast & Furious. His department oversaw a vast gunrunning operation that sent thousands of firearms to Mexican drug cartels. Two members of Americans law enforcement have been murdered with these guns. The Mexican government estimates that over two hundred Mexican citizens, including many law enforcement officers, have been murdered with these weapons.

The operation violated US law, Mexican law, and international treaties between the US and Mexico.

The Wall Street Journal even accused the DOJ of facilitating the sale of fragmentation grenades to Mexican drug cartels. They base they claim on Internet DOJ documents that have been released.

Internal memos show that Fast & Furious was a ”false flag” operation to justify more gun control measures in the United States.

Eric Holder gave a statement to Congress under oath claiming that he had only learned about the operation “a few weeks ago.” Internal DOJ documents prove that he had known about the operation for at least ten months. Shortly after, Barack Obama admitting knowing about the operation for a longer period of time than what Holder had admitted too.

Holder now tells the press that he ”regrets” giving Congress false information in a letter about Fast & Furious. However he has yet to address accusations of perjury in his under oath testimony to Congress.

Sixty US House members are calling for Eric Holder’s resignation. Rep. Ron Paul called for his arrest and prosecution. He says the operation was “criminal,” and a ”false flag.”

However, Eric Holder characterized his critics as white racists. He said the scandal has been blown out proportion by white people who are only attacking him because he is “African-American.”

Georgia Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson went even farther. He said critics of Eric Holder are ”white supremecists.”Johnson is well known for crazed outbursts. He once stated on the House floor that the island of Guam might ”capsize” from overpopulation.

Many of Johnson’s black colleagues disagree with his extreme sentiment. A staff member for the Congressional Black Caucus said members are ”divided” on Holder. The staffer characterized the position of the caucus as feeling that Holder should be investigated but not subjected to a ”witch hunt.”

Congressman: Holder’s race-card play ‘orchestrated’ by Obama

Illinois Republican Rep. Joe Walsh, one of the first members of Congress to demand Attorney General Eric Holder resign over the ill-fated Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program, told The Daily Caller that Holder’s recent use of racial politics to attack his critics appears to be something President Barack Obama “orchestrated.”

Walsh agrees with Florida Republican Rep. Allen West’s assessment of Holder’s behavior, saying Holder’s race card is the “last card in the deck.”

“This is sort of the last refuge that people on the left will go to when they’re in trouble,” Walsh said in a phone interview. “They’ll accuse their opponents of racism. My God, we’ve got tons of problems in this country and … this president, is through Eric Holder, saying, ‘Nope, you can’t criticize me. If you criticize me, we’re going to accuse you of racism.’ Shame on them, that’s terrible.”

Walsh said Obama’s continued silence in the face of Holder’s inflammatory rhetoric demonstrates that the president shares in the blame for the attorney general’s choice of words.

“His [Obama’s] silence, to me, tells me the president is complicit in this,” Walsh said. “And, even if he does come out and say something, I can’t believe Eric Holder can even make a statement like that. In his statement he refers to himself and the president. I can’t believe that Eric Holder made that statement without either understanding that the president agreed with it, or [that] he had the president’s permission to say this.”

In a front page story, Holder told The Sunday New York Times that he thinks his critics are motivated by race. Holder said some unspecified faction — which he referred to as the “more extreme segment” — is driven to criticize both him and President Barack Obama because of the color of their skin.

“This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him,” Holder said, according to the Times. “Both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that we’re both African-American.” (RELATED: Full coverage of Operation Fast and Furious)

Walsh said Holder’s use of racial politics can also be explained by pressure the attorney general is feeling from a groundswell of House members demanding his resignation. To date 60 congressmen, two senators, every major Republican presidential candidate and two sitting governors have asked Holder to step down over the Operation Fast and Furious scandal.

Additionally, 75 House members have signed on to a House resolution calling for a vote of “no confidence” in Holder as attorney general. Between the two lists, there are 86 in the House who disapprove of Holder continuing to lead the DOJ.

Walsh said Holder’s comments appear to be a small-scale preview of the 2012 election season when Obama “will do anything to get re-elected.”

“This is so despicable, because what they’re doing is they’re trying real early now to lay down the ground rules for his re-election,” Walsh said. “This time around, the American people are not going to put up with it. We can criticize this president based on the job he’s done — I don’t care what his skin coloris.”

“He is going to say, because he did this during the last election, and the media is going to enable him to get away with it, that any time we criticize him, it’s because of his race,” Walsh added. “For Eric Holder to take that same line right now is absolutely ridiculous and to me, it’s just more fodder proving that he needs to resign.”

White House spokesman Eric Schultz confirmed that he received The Daily Caller’s questions about whether President Obama agrees with Holder’s characterization of his critics as racists. Schultz promised to answer the question on Monday, but he had not responded at press time.

Obama to investigate high gas prices

Obama is ready to get serious about the skyrocketing oil prices. He’s not going to eliminate red tape, bureaucracy, or regulations to make drilling easier. He’s also not going to stop making deals with foreign oil companies. But he has promised to investigate potential manipulation of energy prices. But why is he ignoring the real story – the declining value of the dollar.

The LA Times reports:

As gas prices across the nation inch higher, the Obama administration will investigate the energy markets for any evidence of manipulation of oil and gas prices through the formation of a new group, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.

With the average price of a gallon of gas at about $3.84 this week, almost a dollar higher than a year ago, according to the Department of Energy, the Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group will search for incidents of fraud and collusion in addition to price manipulation.

However, Glenn reported that a new CNBC story has pegged the declining dollar as the source for the rising prices of not only gas, but other necessities as well. CNBC reports, “Weakness in the US dollar, which is causing everything to go up—including gas prices, food and stocks—is unlikely to go away soon as a selling frenzy hits the currency market.”

“This is the most important thing I think you can teach your friends, and you don’t have to go to a crazy conspiracy theorist like me, of course,” Glenn said.

“One, The Fed has to stop printing money. Two, we must cut our debts and deficits. And three, repeat one and two,” Glenn said.

“Remember, as the President does this little DOJ thing looking for, you know, the problem of gas prices and why gas prices are so bad, the answer is the Federal Reserve, period,” Glenn said. “Your dollar is being devalued and everybody who has an ability to get out of the dollar is getting out of the dollar.”

Issa’s Budget Hearings: Brought to You by the Koch Brothers

Yesterday morning, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa invited Wisconsin Gov. Walker to testify to the committee about fixing state and municipal budgets. It was an interesting choice of witness.

Walker has, in recent weeks, become a walking symbol of exactly the way Americans don’t want to solve government budget crises. He caused a national uproar when he proposed taking away the collective bargaining rights of public workers…and then snuck his union-busting bill through the state legislature in the middle of the night. He’s since come under fire for handing out jobs to the friends andfamilies of wealthy donors and political allies, and handing out massive tax breaks to his buddies in big business.

It’s no surprise that Issa called Walker to lend his expertise to the committee. The two have similar fiscal priorities, and some important friends in common. Most notable among these friends are theKoch brothers, the billionaire duo who have made themselves into political spending powerhouses in their efforts to push extreme pro-corporate policies at the state and federal level.

The Koch brothers, through their company’s political action committee, have contributed tothirteen Republican members of the Oversight Committee. Last year, they spent $10,000 to help elect Issa to a seat he was set to win in a cake-walk, and contributed an extra $5,000 to his PAC. Issa has a history of being pretty friendly to the corporate world, which in turn generously backs his campaigns. Earlier this year, when he took over the Oversight committee, he sent a letter to 150 corporations, trade associations, and conservative think tanks asking them which proposed regulations he should attack in hearings.

And corporations’ allegiances with Issa have paid off nicely. As his first act as committee chair, he appointed subcommittee chairs whose campaigns were bankrolled by the special interests under their committees’ jurisdictions. The second hearing he convened in his new post was a two-hour extravaganza of congressional Republicans and corporate executives blasting EPA regulations, which he labeled “Regulatory Impediments to Job Creation.”

The Kochs and their kind get access to Walker in part because they give money, and lots of it. The Koch PAC contributed $43,000 to Walker’s 2010 election bid, and another $1.2 million to the Republican Governors Association, which in turn helped out Walker.

It’s no coincidence that the Koch’s fingerprints were all over yesterday’s hearing. In a political system where clean elections laws are steadily being swept away, wealthy advocates for corporate welfare have the ability to buy unprecedented influence on decision makers. While millions of Americans struggle with unemployment, lose their insurance, and try to get by on less, it’s the Koch agenda that gets a hearing in Washington.

At the House hearing, Walker called his budget strategies “progressive.” But it should be clear to anyone watching what has been going on in Wisconsin that Walker’s policies are exactly the opposite: he has been a leader at the state level in walking back our progressive social contract. A real progressive budget strategy ensures that everybody pays their fair share and that nobody is left without basic necessities. The budgets that Walker and his allies in the U.S. Congress are pressing for make the middle class and the poor pay for tax breaks for multibillion dollar corporations.

Gov. Walker has come to represent the kind of politics where the requests of the moneyed trump the needs of the needs of the middle class. It’s awfully telling that this is who the House GOP is looking to for advice.

White House Continues Cheering for Al Jazeera: ‘A Really Important Media Entity’

Hillary Clinton loves it. It seems to love the Muslim Brotherhood. And now Barack Obama seems to be a fan of it, too. What is “it?” The Middle Eastern cable news channel Al Jazeera.

In a lengthy article, Politico reveals that the once-demonized outlet during the Bush administration has become a favorite in the Obama White House. In fact, its programing is plastered all over Pennsylvania Avenue and Obama is singing its praises:

Seven years after then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the broadcaster’s reporting “vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable” and President George W. Bush joked about bombing it, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised it as “real news” in her recent Senate testimony.

Not only that, her staffers, as well as those of the CIA and the Obama White House, were attending the Congressional Correspondents’ Dinner as Al-Jazeera’s guests.

“They are a really important media entity, and we have a really great relationship with them,” said Dana Shell Smith, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for international media engagement, who speaks Arabic and has frequently appeared on the channel. “This administration has empowered those of us who actually do the communicating to be in a close relationship with Al-Jazeera. They understand that the relationship can’t consist of complaining to each other about the differences we have.”

The differences also have shrunk as the big story in the Middle East has shifted from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the democratic movements sweeping the region. In the recent uprisings, U.S. interests tended to line up with Al-Jazeera’s, and President Barack Obama alluded to both the network’s influence and its pro-democracy bent in remarks caught on an open mic during a closed-door fundraiser last week.

“The emir of Qatar come by the Oval Office today, and he owns Al-Jazeera basically,” Obama said in remarks recorded by CBS News’s Mark Knoller. “Pretty influential guy. He is a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout the Middle East. Reform, reform, reform. You’re seeing it on Al-Jazeera.”

[…]

Today, when he visits the White House, officials tell him they watch AJE to monitor the protests, and at the State Department, “when you go down the hallway, you see it on virtually every TV and computer.”

That’s bad news, says Cliff Kincaid, director of the Accuracy in Media Center for Investigative Reporting and president of America’s Survival. He told Politico that Al Jazeera’s programming could put Americans at risk:

“To Comcast, and other cable and satellite providers, we say, do not expand Al-Jazeera throughout the U.S. Otherwise you will increase the chances of Americans being killed by those manipulated by ‘Jihad TV,’ the terrorist network, and you, Comcast, will have blood on your hands,” Kincaid told an audience of about 30 at the press club.

The republic under attack

The events unfolding in Wisconsin are only the beginning of an open assault on the American way of life. These are the people who would willingly destroy the republic to get their way. They don’t value the republic, they have no use for the founders, these are all things that stand in the way of their power and control over you, the citizen. They are not happy with the money we willingly give them for the jobs they do, they demand more. They don’t care how we get it, they want it and more than that, they want to prove to us that they can take it.
